Extremely Specific Gift Guide: For the Fiber Freak
You have my no-Amaz*n guarantee for all of these gift ideas, too.
I love reading gift guides every year, but I also feel so deeply oppressed by the whiskey stones of Big Gift Guide, so I thought it would be fun to compile a series of extremely specific gift guides. So far I have three ready so stay tuned for the next two.
First up, we have the fiber freak. She is the one who is always working on a little project, always picking up a new hobby, and she’s a huge snob about the fiber mix in her knits. Rather than Googling “gifts for knitters,” may I present you with some options?
Glerup slippers with leather soles
I know they’re $100 but these are wool house shoes that are absolutely gorgeous and so comfortable. Their wool fabrication means that they absorb and wick moisture while never getting too smelly. I got these last winter and I have worn them all day, every day since. I even bring them with me when I travel because I don’t feel quite at home without them!
Knitting mirror glasses
These glasses are extremely goofy but fiber people swear by them for watching TV while working, but more importantly, for helping maintain good ergonomic form. Show your crafter you care about their neck with this gift.
What Artists Wear by Charlie Porter
The fiber freak and fashion nerd venn diagrams aren’t perfect circles, but they do overlap significantly. This book is totally on my list of Things I Want To Buy At Some Point because I love its project of focusing on the ways artists express themselves through everyday aesthetic choices.
A Beginner’s rug-hooking kit
Literally all my homies want to learn rug hooking.
Beginner embroidery kit
Something that inclues materials, supplies, and instructions is most useful, so they don’t have to go out and buy anything new to get started!
Visible Mending: A Modern Guide to Darning, Stitching and Patching the Clothes You Love by Arounna Khounnoraj
I got this book a couple years ago and it taught me so many different mending skills. The thing about visible mending kits you can get (like these from The Endery) is that they are cute, but the fiber freak in your life will likely already have all the tools (yarn, embroidery floss, snips, needles). Get them the book instead and you can open up options for a bunch of new mending techniques!
I bought these slippers a month or two ago after putting it off and I am obsessed. I'm glad I'm not the only person. I love that they are the perfect mix of support/structure without it feeling like you're wearing shoes around the house
I would genuinely love to learn rug hooking haha
